Part One X-Files Basement Office "Monica, what's this?" "What John?" "This, on my desk, it wasn't here before." "I don't know John." She moved over to John's desk to look at what he had in his hand. He hadn't noticed she sounded weary. "Did anyone come in here while I was out?" "I didn't see anyone but I was busy doing some checks on the computer. What is it?" John was holding up a card and reading its contents. When finished he looked up at his X-Files partner wide-eyed with surprise. Monica lightly frowned, took the card from his hand and also read. <> "Oh John pretty kitch lines there, and signed your secret admirer." "The last time I got a Valentine's Day card was when I was sixteen." He was still stunned. "I was the one who used to give them," snickered Monica to herself but John hadn't heard. "Who do you think it could be from?" He read the card again as he said this. Monica rested her butt against his desk. "Hmmmm, has there been anyone recently who's paid extra interest in you?" "Maybe, I don't know Monica, most of the time I'm immersed in my work to notice. Anyway, I'm used to keeping to myself since moving down here." Monica decided to take a risk with her next question. "So who do you hope it's from?" John looked up at her with mournful eyes and she knew what he was thinking. "You want it to be Dana, don't you John." He responded by hanging his head and leaning forward ever so slightly. "You want her to notice you but her heart is with Mulder." He got up out of his seat and walked around the room, hand on his head. "Are you going to go?" "Go?" "Yes," she picked up the card and read again, "To Rem's Bar at eight." "I don't know Mon, I'm too old for this bull." "It's not bull John, it's romantic. When was the last time you went on a date, a real date?" He hesitated. "There! You can't even remember." She approached him and rested a hand on his forearm and he looked down at it and into her eyes reading the gesture. She smiled, let go and began walking back to her work. "Well it's up to you John but I say go for it. My God you need some excitement in your life. You should know a good fuck every now and then is good for your health." "Mon!" It was John's turn to approach Monica's desk. "If I go will you go too?" "You mean you want me to hold your hand? I think you're a big boy now. Anyway I have a date tonight." "A date?" "Uh huh, it is Valentine's Day and Brad has been pushing me recently to start up a relationship again." "Oh Mon, that shithead! Why don't you just tell him once and for all to fuck off!" "I can handle him John and I did say a good screw is good for the health." He looked at her shocked but she stayed deadpan. "Tell me you're not leading him on!" "Look John, you want a hand hold tonight? How about Brad and I go to Rem's Bar too. If it turns out she's a stinker we'll come over and rescue you. If not then make sure you're stocked up on the condoms." He looked sideways at her and smiled. He liked the way she spoke her mind without fear of reprisal. He really liked his partner. He loved her personality, he also admired her chestnut eyes and the way when she smiled her whole face lit up. If it wasn't for Brad and for regulations he might even make a move on her. It was really out of the question. Part Two Rem's Bar Monica looked over to the handsome man entering the door. He had on a crisp, newly pressed black suit and deep purple open neck silk shirt. His hair was neatly groomed - he looked absolutely edible. Brad followed the direction of her eyes to John Doggett who stood at the Rem's Bar door surveying the room. "Monica, did you invite him here?" Brad put the emphasis on the word *him* and looked a little ill at ease. "Relax Brad, we're just helping him out here." "Is that why you invited me out, so you can keep an eye on your partner?" John had seen Brad and Monica over in a far booth but bypassed them and headed for the bar. "We're just here as backup." "Backup? Since when does Doggett need backup on a date." He was getting a little snarky. Monica laughed, "Brad, lighten up here, let's just see who he's with then we can get on with our date, okay?" "You mean he doesn't know?" "It's a secret admirer, he got a Valentine's Day card left on his desk this morning." "Who left it?" Brad was becoming suspicious. Monica put a hand on his arm and said, "You think I left it there don't you! It's all a scheme for me to get in his pants." Brad just shook his head embarrassed by her words. "You tell me Monica. You're the one that was screwing him in New York when you were meant to be dating me." "Brad," her voice quieter, "We talked about that and why. I thought you'd forgiven me." "I can tell you still have the hots for him, it was written all over your face when you saw him at the door just now." "Look!" "What?" "Over there by the bathroom." A familiar petite red head was walking towards Doggett who was sitting drinking a beer at the bar. She sat next to him and they exchanged happy greetings. "So it was Dana after all." "Scully is his secret admirer?" "Looks like it. Hey Brad, look where her hand is. I think she's had a change of heart. Maybe she's finally realised that a life with Mulder has long gone." Brad was obviously relieved. "Let's get some fresh drinks and enjoy ourselves. Maybe we can go dancing later?" Brad placed his hand on hers and smiled into her eyes. "That would be nice." Every so often Monica looked over to the couple deep in conversation at the bar. This time she looked over and John was alone, head in his hands. Something was wrong. "Monica, you've been watching him all night." "I'm just keeping an eye out for him. Look Brad I have to talk to him." "No you don't! You're with me tonight" He was a little forceful with his words. "Brad lighten up, I'm just going to see what's wrong. I'll be back soon, promise." "Monica!" He placed a hand on her wrist. "Either you're with him or me tonight, choose now!" Monica just got out of her seat, looked at him as if he wasn't serious, and walked towards the bar. She didn't see Brad walk out the door in a huff. "John," she spoke softly as she placed a hand on his back. "Talk to me." He looked up worry lining his face. "C'mon John, you're coming home with me tonight." She looked across to where Brad wasn't and shrugged. "Let's talk about this privately." PART THREE Monica's studio apartment was spacious. He'd been there a number of times now and was quite familiar with its layout. "What'll it be John? Beer, wine, whiskey, coffee?" Monica called from the kitchen. "Beer will be fine Mon." He flipped through a couple of magazines on the coffee table as he sat down on the sofa. She brought back two opened beers and placed one in front of her partner. "John, I can tell you're hurting. Tell me." "I can't believe she did that." "Did what John?" "She sent me the Valentine's Day card so she could talk to me." "And?" "Said it would get my attention." He was looking down and shaking his head. Monica saw the pain in his face and empathized. "John, it'll help to talk about it. Common let me take your jacket." He stood up and absently removed his suit coat and gave it to Monica who then draped it over the chair next to her. "She told me," he hesitated. "...that she didn't want our relationship to go any further than it already was." "John?" Monica got up from her seat and moved to sit near her partner. "She said that even though Mulder's not here now she'll always love him and she didn't want to lead me on." Monica moved closer and rested a comforting hand on his arm. "That's a good thing John." "A good thing?" he looked at her worriedly. "She was being honest with you. Now you have a reason to move on with your life." She linked her arm in his and he turned to see her smiling face. For a moment their eyes locked then Monica broke eye contact and removed her arm a little self-consciously. What had John been thinking then? He had something else on his mind, something he was not telling her. "So John you're most welcome to stay here the night. I'm here for you." He looked at her trying to read her face wondering whether she meant for him to sleep in her bed. That's what Monica wanted and hoped he'd assume that's what she meant. She had yearned to have him in her bed again ever since the times back in New York. Brad had been the one to put a stop to that. "Monica I should..." She interrupted knowing that he was probably going to say he'd better be going home. "You can sleep here on the couch. It opens up into a bed. I'll get the sheets." Before he had any chance to protest she was off. When Monica came back with the bedding John had already assembled the bed. She had been hoping there was a way she could ask him to sleep in her bed but she still wasn't sure if her feelings for him were reciprocated. "... and John, you know where I'll be if you want me." .................... John couldn't sleep. What Scully had told him was playing on his mind. What he hadn't told Monica was making him break out into cold sweats. He just had to think about how he was going to act on this. What he did now could certainly affect the rest of his life. Would he or wouldn't he? .................. "Monica, are you awake?" John said in a soft gravelly voice near her bedroom door. It was dark and quiet. She'd been having a restless sleep too. "John?" She rolled over to see him in the hazy light. Her heart lightened, he looked wonderful just in his boxers. This was exactly what she was hoping for. He was an inch in her room and that was enough. "Come over." That request was sufficient for him too. She pulled the covers back and he knew there was no doubt what she wanted him to do. Without words he got into her bed. "You want to talk John?" They were facing each other now and she waited for him to speak. "Is it true Monica?" "Is what true?" "What Dana said to me tonight, that you love me?" "So that was what was on your mind before. Dana told you that?" "Yes, so is it true? I have to know Monica. This could affect our whole working relationship." She looked onto his eyes and brought a hand to his face, brushing the backs of her fingers lightly along his cheek. "John, I've never stopped loving you, ever since that time in New York." He took her hand and brought it to his lips and kissed her fingers. "You want this Monica? You want me to sleep with you because if I do you can't leave me for Brad like you did last time." "I know and that was a mistake. I thought it was him I loved but it was you. It's only ever been you. When I realised what my heart was telling me it was too late. You were already out of my life." "Monica, if I'd only known. Come here." As she moved closer he wrapped his arms around her and drew her into a marvelous hug. "I want to make love to you Monica." For the first time in a number of years they kissed. It was sweet and soft as though they were remembering what each other had tasted like. A sturdy hand went under her nightshirt and felt up her leg then over her hip and rested on her back. Monica's hand went down to the elastic of his boxers then slid underneath. She had often taken sneak looks at his butt while at work now she was about to take in its feel with her fingertips. John was smiling and she knew he liked this. John was tugging on the rim of Monica's nightshirt and began pulling it up and off over her head. "You feel even better than I remember," he rumbled as his hands felt over her back then down to her butt. "And you're still a damn sexy man John Doggett." She pulled on his boxers and he took them off letting them land on the floor. "I never thought I'd be doing this with you tonight Mon." "Me neither but I always hoped to feel you next to me like this again." They kissed once more as John gently rolled on top of her. "Better go and get the condoms." He went to get up and he laughed as she pulled him back down again. "You know we don't need them, you tease." "And I don't really have any. Do you think I'd sleep with just anyone after one date?" He gazed into her eyes and she knew he was saying more than just words. Leaning down once more his lips met hers. As the kiss intensified she opened herself up for him, letting his thick shaft slip inside her. He pushed all the way ever so gradually filling her entirely. "Oh Monica, I'd forgotten how good this felt." She sighed satisfaction and answered, "You're going to feel it a lot more often too." "Hmmmm." As he moved in and out of her slowly she wondered how could she have ever left this man for Brad of all people. His lovemaking was the best. This man was a true prize. She was going to do her best to hang onto him this time. Her hands felt over his butt as she felt warm tingles all over her skin at the feel of him in and around her. Her heart was pounding as rhythm increased. She had never loved anyone as much as she loved this man now. Their kisses were hungry as they headed toward lovemaking's sweet release. Neither of them had been lovers for quite some time so when it did happen, the feelings were breathtaking. John stayed on top giving her tiny kisses on her nose and cheeks. It was hard to smile that much and kiss at the same time. "Happy Valentine's Day John." "And you too Mon, happy Valentine's Day." They lay in contentedly in each other's arms until sleep overcame them. Epilogue "How did it go last night?" Monica turned to see Dana at the basement office door. "How did what go? You mean with Brad?" "No, with John." Monica was confused. "Dana, what are you talking about?" The look on Scully's face gave it away. "You did this. This was all planned?" Dana gave Monica one of her rare smiles. "You came in here yesterday and left the card on John's desk. You knew he'd talk to me about it." "Okay, so how did it go with John last night?" It was Monica's turn to smile. "You didn't." Scully saw Monica just raise her eyebrows and knew. "You slept with him?" "It was wonderful Dana. I know what the implications are here but I want this. I want him." Monica paused, listening. "That's him. He's coming back with the coffees. "Monica, they'd run out of skim milk so....." John paused when he saw Scully. He looked from one to the other women confused by the looks on their faces. Given time he'd work out that this had all been planned. Scully had set it all up to get him and Monica together. This had been a Valentine's Day he'd never forget. The End
