No response, and bottle of wine in hand, he moved further into the large studio apartment. "Monica? You there?" Still no response. He placed the bottle on a nearby table and wandered through to where he smelt the wonderful aromas of cooking. "Monica?" She was there facing towards the stove humming away to herself oblivious to his presence. He edged over and placed a hand on her shoulder. She whipped around and grabbed his arm in a deadlock. "Ow! Monica! That hurts," Doggett's face winced in pain. On recognition of her mistake she released her grip and took off her walkman headphones, leaving a lighter hand on his hurt arm. "John, you shouldn't startle me like that." "Obviously not or I may have to wear a permanent arm brace." He shook his arm as if to shake away the rest of the pain and slowly the frown melted away. She was looking at him again with one of those looks. One of admiration and something else he couldn't put his finger on yet. "Hungry?" The recent event slid from memory as she turned around once more to tend to her cooking. Doggett leaned over her shoulder and commented, "What ya cookin'? Smells so good." He went to put a finger in the pan for tasting but she slapped it away. "It's my specialty, penne pasta with poached chicken breast, honey brown mushrooms and garlic cream sauce." Without faltering she added. "Did you bring the wine?" "Hmmm, sounds and smells delicious." He went to retrieve the bottle from the nearby table and placed it on the bench beside her. "Point me towards the corkscrew and the glasses and I'm yours." Monica just giggled at this comment and nodded towards a drawer a couple of metres away. .......................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Two Doggett had taken the final mouthful of chicken and his last sip of wine when it happened again. Reyes noticed his grimace and had to comment. "John, what is it?" It took him a few moments to respond. "I've been having these all day." "What?" Doggett didn't see the look of surprise and anticipation on her face. "These images." "You too?" Reyes knew something and Doggett looked up to her face for confirmation. "You're seeing them too aren't you?" "Talk to me Monica." "I've been having mental images at odd times throughout the day. It's as though they are forced into my mind. They're not painful just suddenly catching me off balance." "Yes, the same." "What did you just see John?" He shook his head trying to picture it better. "It was a scarecrow." Monica just chuckled. "What's so funny?" " I think it's time to compare notes John. This is no coincidence. This must mean something. C'mon let's get some dessert and sit by the fire." Each with a bowl of lemon meringue pie and cream they headed for the couch. "So John, you saw a scarecrow. What else have you seen?" He took a mouthful and thought. "An old house, a clover leaf and .." He reached for the memory. " and a windmill." "Hmm John, they don't seem too connected do they? Mine neither. Some of the images I've seen are of a roadside fruit merchant and a black crow. Again nothing that links together." "Do you have a pen and paper?" He went to get up but she pushed his arm down and smiling, went to get the items herself. "We still need some sort of connecting picture here John. Maybe it'll come to us. They finished their dessert and began on coffees. They were visibly relaxed with each other now. This was the first time Doggett had been invited over for a meal since Reyes had moved into her new apartment. He liked the aura of this place, it suited Monica and her lifestyle. He almost imagined her as Lara Croft and rappelling from the ceiling, the place was huge. "What are you laughing about John?" "Oh nothin'." He was not that comfortable with her yet. He took a breath, looked into Reyes' face and she knew what he was going to say. "Monica, this has been wonderful. You are a great cook and great company. I'm going to have to return the favour soon." The way the light from the fire flickered on his face and reflected in his eyes was so alluring. He went to get up but Monica edged closer and rested her hand on his arm. "Don't go," she said softly but firmly. "Mon, honey, what are you sayin' here?" He looked into her eyes for more information and certainly saw desire. "John, I want you to stay here tonight, with me." "Monica, you want me to sleep with you? 'Cause you know that can't happen. It's against all department regulations." Still with her hand on his arm she looked down thinking. "John, we don't have to have sex, just sleep here with me, in case we get that *connecting* image." She looked wonderful in the fire light, how could he say no to that. She was right. They had to wait for that final clue. This was too much of a mystery to just shrug off. "I'll sleep on the couch." "No!" Reyes said quietly yet quickly. "Sleep with me in my bed. I want to know the minute either of us has another image." "But Monica, I don't think this is a good idea." She just looked into his eyes, took his hand and led him to the bedroom situated on the other side of the vast expanse of living space. He was spellbound. ........................................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Three "John, I have to tell you that I don't usually wear anything to bed, I don't own any pajamas but I can find something if you're uncomfortable with that." "Don't go to any trouble on my account," he chuckled and took of his clothes, neatly folding them and resting them on a nearby chair. The covers were cool after the heat from the open fire and both bodies noticeably shivered. "Come 'ere Mon." Doggett held out a comforting arm and she snuggled into him. "Now don't go getting any ideas from this, this is purely for research purposes. Right?" "Right." Reyes smiled to herself thinking how easy it was to be in this position. She was in bed naked with her partner, well almost naked he still had on his boxers. He felt so warm against her, it was easy to fall asleep cradled in his arms. ............................................ It was early morning when that image rushed into Reyes' brain waking her violently. She sat bolt upright, letting out a frightening moan. "Mon, what is it?" Doggett said groggily. "What did you see?" He sat up next to her resting a strong arm around her bare shoulders. "John, that was the image," she paused. "That was the connecting part." "What?" Doggett was anxious. "A highway sign. Highway 62." They both looked at each other in that opaque light that connects night to morning. "That's it then. First thing in the morning we're off down highway 62 looking for clues. C'mon let's get some more sleep. We don't know what the day holds for us." He gently coaxed her down willing her to relax into him. He kissed her hair as she nestled into his shoulder, her arm around him resting on his stomach. This was so comfortable. It felt so right. Reyes was finding it difficult to leave her hand where it was and not move it further down. She imagined what it would be like to feel down under his boxers, over his hip and quads. What would it be like to move it up all over his chest then down his arm then finally up to his face, running a finger along his lips. "Monica, what are you doin'?" She realised that her thoughts had not just stayed in her mind but her fingers had somehow made their way underneath his boxers and were playing with his hipbone. "Oh," she laughed but left her hand where it was. "As much as I'm wanting to do this now, we can't." Monica looked up at him. "You want this?" "Mon, what red-blooded male in bed with a beautiful naked woman wouldn't?" She felt like moving her hand to another place to check the state of his *wanting* but his heart racing next to her ear was all the proof she needed. "Mon, I think I oughtta move to the couch." "No! No John, I'll behave." She moved her hand away and rested it again on his stomach. She would just have to go back to imagining for now. She smiled to herself as she once again relaxed into dreamland. ............................................ "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Four "Highway 62 is west of here, that way." Monica pointed from the passenger seat after consulting her large map. Doggett turned the wheel of their rental car and headed towards the highway from Monica's image last night and the possible solution to why they were both experiencing this strange phenomenon. Travelling west along the highway they were both silent as they looked for the clues from their images. "Look! Over there!" Monica pointed towards a structure not often seen in these parts of the country. It was an old derelict windmill. It had seen better days but it was unmistakingly the image Doggett had seen the previous day. "John, is that what you saw? Is it the exact same one?" Doggett couldn't believe it. He'd never seen it before in reality, he'd never even been along this highway in his life but that was undoubtedly the same windmill he had seen in his mind's eye. He nodded to Reyes. "So we're on the right track." This was getting exciting but also a little unsettling. They were heading into unknown territory here both figuratively and physically. After hours of travelling and no more clues they were wondering if this highway was the way to go. "Maybe Monica we were meant to stop at that windmill and not keep travelling. Maybe all the other clues were there and we've come all this way for nothin'." Doggett looked across from the driver's seat. "No," Monica just shook her head and pointed. "Look John!" By the side of the road up ahead was a general store and on the wall at the side was a large painted clover leaf. They found out that the name of this small township was Clovertown. "I think it's time we stopped for directions Monica." "And maybe some lunch, I'm starved." They pulled the car up in front of the general store and went inside. It had old world charm, definitely different from the seemingly sterile environment of the big city. "Can I help you?" said a croaky voice from behind the counter. Reyes and Doggett looked around at the wares and Doggett spoke, "We're after some lunch and some answers to our questions if you don't mind." Doggett tried to sound friendly. "Well the lunch will cost ya but the answers are free as long as I can give them." The old man pulled a couple of menus out from behind the counter and ushered the couple to a table. "I'll leave those with you for a moment. Holler when you're ready." Reyes smiled across at Doggett as the old man waddled away. They ordered quiche and salad with milkshakes and were into their coffees when Reyes noticed Doggett's faraway look. "Penny for them." "What?" Doggett was confused. "Penny for your thoughts." "Oh that. Monica, I was just thinking, I hope you don't think less of me for jumping into bed with you last night." "John," she moved up closer to him and linked arms with his. "I was the one that invited you into my bed, remember?" "Yes, but I could have insisted to sleep on the couch. I probably would have heard you wake up from there anyway." He laughed. "What's done is done. Anyway tell me you didn't like snuggling up together. I'm so often alone that it was a welcome change. Much better than my old battered teddy." "So you're comparing me to an old teddy bear are you?" "Oh yes, and you come out quite favorably I can tell you." She smiled and went to give him a kiss on the cheek. As she did so, he moved his head towards her and their mouths brushed. Reyes felt a bolt of electricity through her body at the gesture and gasped but didn't move away. Neither did Doggett. They wanted more. "John, I want to do this." Before he could reply they were kissing. Reyes put her arm around behind his neck to pull him closer. This was marvelous. Doggett was loosening up too and mouths opened to each other grinding in infinite delight. Their minds went internally absorbing the feeling from this first kiss. Arms moved around bodies to pull more closely to intensify the effect of this union. They were only stopped by an *ahem* from beside the table. "Oh, I'm sorry." Monica caught her breath. "You wanted some answers," mentioned the shopkeeper. "Mind if I sit down?" He was totally unaware he'd broken the spell. It was probably just as well because Reyes felt herself getting quite heated. Soon she would have wanted more but also knew that this would be taboo territory for both of them. "Um, let me introduce myself, I'm Monica and this is John." "Well I'm just plain old Fred." "Hello Fred, we're on the lookout for a friend's house," she lied. "And we've lost the address." The man kept listening. "Well we do have some clues as to where it is and wondered if you could help." "What clues are these?" The man shifted in his seat as Doggett spoke, "Is there a roadside fruit stand anywhere near here? One that sells apples, oranges, peaches and so on?" The man thought for a moment. "That would have to be old McIntey's. He has an orchard about five or so miles up the road." "Thankyou, that must be it. Okay another question. Apparently nearby their house is a scarecrow - dressed in black, bushy straw hair and a red hat." Enlightenment dawned on his face. "Yes I've seen that one. It belongs to the Jenner family about fifteen miles past the fruit stand." Doggett and Reyes knew they were making headway here. "Okay Fred last question," Monica asked this one. "Have you seen a black crow around here lately?" "No, he slowly shook his head. "No, that I would remember. Not too many crows in these parts." "Thankyou for your time Fred. We're running late so we must go." The partners paid for their meal and thanked the man. He shouted after them, "Hope you find your friends." They just waved and nodded from the car. ............................................. "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Five "This is mighty weird Monica," Doggett had mentioned while passing the McIntey's fruit stand. Now that they'd seen the scarecrow, the exact one he had witnessed in his vision it was becoming a little too real. He stopped the car for them to stretch their legs a little. "So where to now?" Looking in all directions this was fairly desolate countryside. There were no structures as far as the eye could see. "We're still missing your black crow, John. Maybe it'll come and direct us to the house in your dream?" Doggett saw that Monica almost looked serious. "C'mon Mon, I think you've been playing too many computer games." She just smiled. "Over there John." She was pointing to something that was not so evident to him. "Where?" "There's a track leading somewhere over that mound. C'mon." She took Doggett's hand and pulled him along. "What about the car?" "Just leave it here, it'll be alright. It only looks like a walking track anyway." Sure enough on taking the track, once at the top of the mound, there it was about half a mile away. It was the old house of Doggett's vision. ............................................. They were both in the front door when it happened again but this time the strongest ever. It was invasive this time. This image was almost like intrusion, somewhat like a raping of the mind. Both agents fell to their knees clutching their heads from the intensity. "What did you see John?" Monica finally spoke after catching her breath. "Oh it was creepy. There was blackness all around and then a small girl...." "About ten years old?" Monica interrupted. Doggett just looked at her and nodded. "She walks towards you and with her comes a bright light from behind?" "Yes, you had it too didn't you? You had the same vision." "Yes John the exact same one. The girl then mouths something but I couldn't understand what she is saying." "I think she says <> but it doesn't make any sense. What could it mean?" "I don't know, but something tells me we've been led here to find out." Monica moved around the house warily looking for any clues. Doggett went the other direction. The house was old and dusty. The only indication of recent occupation were a few dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. There was the faint smell of charcoal in the air that they both noticed. "Here Monica!" She raced in the direction of his voice. Doggett had opened the door to the cellar and was shining his torch down the steps. "What is it John?" "I don't know but I think we should take a look together." With torch in hand and Monica close behind, hands resting on Doggett's shoulders, they took the steps down. "Oh John, I get a definite bad vibe here. I don't like this place." "You and me both." They moved one step at a time slowly, all senses aware. Then Doggett tripped, or a step was broken, but both of them fell down hard to the ground, the torch slipping out of his hands. When they both came to their senses all they could see was the light from the open cellar door. The torch must have switched itself off because down there it was dark. "C'mon Monica, let's get outta here!" They both agreed and felt for the base of the stairs. Then all of a sudden there was a loud noise, a clicking sound and complete blackness. ........................................ "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Six "Who's out there?" Doggett yelled from the base of the stairs. Reyes clung to his arm, not being able to see anything. Thirty minutes later they'd done all they could to escape this dungeon but not being able to see two centimetres in front of them made it difficult. "C'mon John. Let's rest and think this one through." Holding his arm she led him away from the stairs and they sat down on the cold, hard ground. "Who would do this? Why?" Doggett's raspy voice pervaded the darkness. "I don't know John but certainly there seemed to be no-one around when we got here." "Gotta find that torch. Hopefully there's another way outta here." "I know what you mean but I don't particularly like crawling around in places I can't see." They'd been on all fours trying to find the illusive torch for about an hour now and eventually looked for each other again in the pitch black. "John is that you?" Reyes said slowly. "Tell me you're touching my arm." "What did you say Monica?" Reyes realised he was a few metres away and gave a panicked squeal. "Monica!" Doggett felt his way over to her. "John, I don't like this. Maybe if we had a little light but this is really creeping me out here. Hold me?" Doggett placed both arms around her protectively. "I'm here Monica, I won't let you go." He felt her physically relax in his arms. After she'd calmed down enough Doggett took off his jacket and lay it on the ground. "C'mon Mon, let's sit and talk." "I hope you told someone where we were going John because this is not how I planned on leaving this world." "Don't worry." Doggett's lips moved in her hair. "Someone will find us. I left the details in a note to Dana and AD Skinner." "I just hope they think on the same wavelength as us and find this place." "Only a matter of time." Doggett rocked his partner in his arms. "Only a matter of time." ....................................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Seven Reyes found herself enjoying the comfort of these strong arms and Doggett noticed her nestle in closer. This brought back the memory of their night together, the way her soft skin lay against his, the way the touch of her fingers on his hip had stirred up desires in him that had long been lying dormant. He had so wanted to kiss her then, to feel over her naked body and to use his hands to find her sensitive places. "John, what's happening here?" She'd noticed how quiet he'd been and that his breathing was becoming rapid. When he didn't reply immediately her hand moved over his shirt clad chest and down lower to feel his erection through his pants. "Oh Monica, I'm sorry." His voice was almost air itself. "No need to be sorry John, I can help you out here." He could *feel* her smile. "We can't do this. My god, I *want* to!" "No-one need know. It can be our secret and you must admit it would be a very pleasant way to pass the time till we figure a way out of here." She rubbed the even harder erection in his pants before he had any chance to protest. "This is weird Monica. We can't see a thing here. We can only feel." She found herself becoming very aroused at the thought of making love here with John Doggett in pitch-blackness. His hand went to her face, resting on her cheek, and guided her to his lips. Fiddling with his belt and zipper she managed to place her hand inside his pants and underneath his boxers to feel the most amazingly hard cock. Her hand felt up and down the shaft as Doggett breathed in her mouth. Doggett moved his hand down to her breasts and squeezed through the thin material, then put a hand underneath to feel the smooth skin of her stomach. "You don't know just how great that feels, you feel." He was more forceful with the kiss this time and she responded with equal fervor. "Take your pants off John." He did so and committed to memory where he'd left them. "You too." He helped her out of her pants and underwear and placed them with his. Positioning a hand on her butt he drew her closer until she could feel him hard between them. Their hands moved slowly over each others' bodies just feeling and imagining each sweet contour. Reyes liked what she felt. She'd often imagined what her partner would look like naked. On several occasions she'd watched that butt of his through his pants and had been tempted to go up and pat it. Something always drew her back though. Now she was actually feeling it. "John, make love to me." She guided him on top of her, legs spread wide. The ground was hard and the air was cool but they were no obstacles as she helped him slip inside her. It took all of Doggett's concentration to hold on, to let this moment last. He felt her wonderful body underneath him and could almost see the look of rapture on her face. "Oh Monica, you feel so good." He pushed further into her and began slowly rocking. Reyes moved her hands over the muscles of his shoulders and arms and back down to his butt as she soaked in all his tactile attention. "When we get out of here," Reyes was surprised she could hardly talk. "You're going to do this to me all night." His strokes became faster. "Oh yes. Don't expect any sleep for the next few days Monica Reyes." She knew Doggett was close to climaxing and this turned on a switch in her that sent her into orgasmic raptures. This release was the most delectable she'd ever felt. In the pitch black around them she almost heard her blood rushing and her body surging with pleasure. The spasms on his cock were enough for Doggett to let go too and their juices and bodies mixed in heavenly bonding. "You don't know how long I've wanted that John." She held him close until they both felt the need to lie side by side. He hugged her tightly jigsawing together all the pieces in his mind, those looks she'd given him and the small gestures that now he realised meant more than just friendship. "Well after that Monica, you know I just can't walk away." "Yes, John. Things have certainly changed and for the better I might add." "That's for sure." .......................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Eight They had just dressed again when from the far side of the basement they saw something. "What was that? Did you see it Monica?" "Yes, it was a light." They waited and the light appeared again. Reyes put her arms out for Doggett and touched his arm. He moved in and held her close. The light became brighter and seemed to grow. Reyes hadn't felt fear like this for quite a while. Here they were trapped in a strange, dark cellar witnessing a bizarre event. It was worse than being in a haunted house at night, at least there they could have run. Here there was nowhere to escape. All they could do was cling together and wait. The light was coming towards them. As it got closer they saw what it was. It was the mutual vision they'd had on entering the house. Here was an apparition of a young girl and indeed she was mouthing something. "What are you saying?" Doggett almost expected an audible response but the girl silently kept repeating the same phrase. "<> you say?" Monica also directed her question to the ghost. "That's what it looks like, <>," Doggett repeated. "Whatever that fucking well means." Then they saw something that they hadn't remembered from their vision. She was pointing and looking over to their left. "What's she pointing to Monica?" "Your guess is as good as mine." Then the girl moved over towards where she was directing them. The light with her illuminated the room and they could see a brick wall. She stopped at the wall and seemed to wait for their next move. As the partners walked over to the wall the apparition vanished once again leaving the room in total darkness. .......................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Nine "Monica, there's something here." Doggett had been feeling along the brick wall when he'd come to a jutting out piece and pushed it. Monica moved over to his voice but stopped still as she heard a rumbling sound and then the wall seemed to give way. "John! Are you all right?" There had been a deafening sound as the bricks fell and lay in a heap on the ground. "Yes, I'm alright but what's that horrible smell." The acrid aroma filled the room and their nostrils. Just as they thought they would pass out from the intensity of the stench there was a sound above them and a bright light. "Agent Doggett? Agent Reyes?" Scully's gentle voice could be heard above them. Their eyes squinted until they'd adjusted slowly to the sudden brightness. "Dana! We're here!" Doggett called. More voices could be heard as torchlight roamed their dark chamber. Suddenly there was light all around them. "Dana? What the fuck!" Doggett looked up to see Scully's hand near what looked like a light switch. Both Doggett and Reyes just looked at each other and laughed. Their gaze lingered momentarily, both smiling at seeing each other for the first time after they'd made love in the dark. Scully had a different look on her face however. "Agent Doggett, Reyes. What's that behind you?" They both looked around to see what looked like a small mummified body on the ground, a body that accompanied that shit awful effluvium. Open-mouthed Scully moved down the steps, clearing the broken one, and walked to the object on the ground. "It's her." Reyes verbalised what they were all thinking. "You know who this is?" Scully was surprised. "We know that's it's a girl, someone who died an awful death and has been holed up here for goodness knows how long." "Her name is Juliet Somers." They both looked at Scully startled. Seeing their confusion she continued. "When we were beginning to become worried about you two, and I'd read your note, I decided to key in all your vision images into the computer." Both agents were all ears. "It all led to a casefile that Mulder had been working on before he was abducted. I was on a weekend away at the time." "Scully, please can we get outta here and continue this upstairs?" Doggett moved to the risers. There was already a team downstairs checking out the scene. AD Skinner was there directing the investigation. "How did you actually find us here?" Doggett asked as they ascended to ground level. "Just followed your clues. We also stopped at the Clovertown General Store then we saw your car parked beside the road." Upstairs Scully went on with her story. "Anyway, Mulder was working on the case of the missing girl Juliet Somers. He too had had visions similar to yours that had led him here to this house and the basement. Of course he'd come up empty handed and the case was never solved, until now." "I hate to correct you Dana but it's not quite solved, we still don't have the murderer." Doggett reminded her. A look of enlightenment appeared on Reyes' face. "John, remember the last vision we had? We thought the girl was mouthing <>. What if she was mouthing the name of her killer." Scully responded back the light dawning, "I am fear? Could she have been saying <>?" "Brian Vere?" Reyes wanted her to explain. "He was one of the suspects in the girl's disappearance, but it could never be proved." "Then that's it, case solved Agent Doggett." Reyes looked across to her still skeptical partner. "I don't get all this. Why the visions? Why us?" Scully proffered a possible explanation. " Just as this girl's spirit from beyond the grave was trying to guide Mulder to her deadly demise so she was guiding you. Maybe it was initiated through occupying the same office as Mulder." Reyes slowly nodded and Doggett just rolled his eyes. "I just wanna know how Mulder got outta here and we couldn't." Then Scully added with a smirk, "I thought you always carried a torch with you Agent Doggett." ........................................... "Negative Image" by RPcrazy Part Ten <> Reyes once again was snuggled up against Doggett's naked, warm body. They had just made exceptional love and were in post-coital euphoria. "Scully told me that Brian Veer was arrested and charged with murder today." "Well all that forensic evidence collected at the crime scene was pretty damning." Reyes clung to her wonderful lover. "What I don't understand is the image you had of a black crow." Doggett looked into her face. "All the others were accounted for except that?" "Well John, I wondered that too and then thought back to my image." "Yes, and..." She giggled at his impatience. "It wasn't a live crow I saw. It was connected to an arm." "An arm? I don't get it Monica." "In the form of a tattoo." Understanding dawned on Doggett's face. "So this killer, Brian Veer, had a tattoo of a crow on his arm. So you're actually saying, if we'd done the same as Scully and keyed all these images into the computer we may have solved the case without going through this ordeal?" "Oh yes but.." She paused and got up on one elbow and kissed his cheek. "But we wouldn't have had amazing sex in the dark. I'll always remember that first time John." John nodded and gave her one of his gorgeous smiles. "Monica, no-one can find out about this, about us .We have to keep this secret at all costs." "What? I can't go around bragging that I have the world's greatest lover as a partner?" She chuckled. " I know John. I want this to continue as much as you do but I also want our X-Files partnership to go on. This has been my dream job for ages now." Doggett nodded agreement and pulled her even closer, never wanting to lose her. The End....of this case file anyway. Sequel - M for Murder Third in trilogy - Until Death Do Us Part
